IP cameras are becoming the industry standard, as they hold many advantages over the old technology analogue cameras, which use coax cables.  As expected, they are more expensive, especially than the cheap imports from the far east, but they easily integrate into your existing network without the need for special analogue to digital converters, PVR recorders etc.

You can record directly to your PC, a dedicated PC or a specialised Network Video Recorder (NVR), meaning that you can start recording on your existing computer, and then eventually migrate to a dedicated NVR when budgets allow for that.

IP cameras video feeds can also be wirelessly transmitted from the camera (directly or with a separate wireless link, depending on model).  This ensures that these cameras are electrically isolated from the rest of the network, meaning that if one camera is struck by lightning, the rest of the cameras/network is unaffected, as there is connecting coax cable between the camera and the network.  The only link would be the your 220V electric circuit in the building.

The camera types vary a lot in design and price, and include fixed and tilt and pan cameras for both indoor and outdoor use.  The lower end cameras have fixed lenses, some have zoom lenses which need to be zoomed and focused during the installation, while the upper end cameras have powerful zoom lenses which can be controlled remotely.
